The small fortress built by the Venetians, for supplemental defense of Candia, was named "Rocca al Mare" (Sea Fortress). After the invention of gunpowder, the Venetians decided to create a larger building that could meet their needs. The construction was completed in 1540. The building had two floors, with 26 rooms for various uses.

A devastating earthquake completely destroyed the Castle in 1303 and it was rebuilt by the Genoese. The fortress was again restored during 1523-1540 and got its ultimate form. During the Ottoman rule, the Castle was again transformed to a prison.

Still, it has quite a bit to offer, with some wonderful historical attractions. One such attraction is the Rocca a Mare Fortress on the northern coast near the entrance to the old city of Heraklion. It was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, on top of some ruins as far back as the 9th century. There's a museum inside, a nice lookout.
